Mogadishu Flash Floods: Travel Planning Update for September 2026

Heavy rain caused flash flooding in parts of Mogadishu on 16 September 2026, prompting the Benadir Regional Administration and Somalia’s disaster authorities to reinforce flood preparedness as the Deyr rainy season approaches.

What travellers should know

The Benadir Regional Administration has warned of potential Super El Niño impacts across all 20 districts of the capital. Somalia’s Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) is also preparing for a higher risk of heavy rainfall, flash flooding and river flooding during the October–December Deyr season.

For visitors, the practical point is to allow flexibility in local movement when heavy rain is forecast. Road conditions and journey times can change quickly during intense rainfall. Follow current guidance from local authorities and your local operator rather than relying on a fixed movement plan.

Official preparedness guidance

SoDMA advises communities to monitor official weather and early-warning updates, avoid crossing flooded roads or waterways, protect essential documents and follow directions from local authorities and emergency services.

This is a weather and travel-planning update, not a prediction that every part of Mogadishu will be affected. Conditions can vary by district and by day.

Planning a Mogadishu visit

If you are travelling during the rainy season, keep your arrival details, accommodation and local transport coordination together and reconfirm movement plans close to travel.
