For many diaspora travellers, East Africa is not a one-country holiday. A family journey may include Nairobi, Mombasa or another Kenyan city before continuing to Mogadishu or another destination in Somalia.
Start with the family purpose
Diaspora travel often has priorities that a standard holiday package does not: family visits, neighbourhoods, heritage, business errands, weddings, community events and time that needs to remain flexible.
Use Kenya as a regional connection when it makes sense
Nairobi is one of East Africa’s major aviation hubs, and Kenya Airways currently maintains booking pages for Nairobi–Mogadishu travel. Mombasa-origin itineraries to Mogadishu are also sold through the airline’s network.
Keep entry requirements separate
Citizenship and passport status matter. Travellers using foreign passports should verify Somalia’s current eTA requirement before departure. Do not assume that regional family ties replace immigration requirements.
Leave time for real family travel
A diaspora itinerary should not schedule every hour. Build the core logistics—airport arrival, hotel, transport and key destinations—then leave room for family time and changes.
