For many international travellers, “East Africa” still means safari first. Wildlife is central to the region’s tourism identity, but it is only one part of the story.

The East African Community itself is pushing for more diverse, multi-destination tourism products. That creates room for city travel, food, coast, heritage, meetings, culture and community experiences alongside the classic wildlife circuit.
Somalia brings the Indian Ocean into the story
Somalia’s official tourism portal highlights the country’s long mainland coastline, beaches, historic sites, archaeology, markets and cultural attractions. Mogadishu in particular combines a capital-city experience with direct access to the coast.
Travel for culture, not only attractions
Some of the most memorable moments are not monuments: a café stop, a market conversation, Somali food, the city changing between morning and evening, or understanding how local people describe their own neighbourhoods.
Historic and coastal destinations
Beyond Mogadishu, travellers may be interested in places such as Hargeisa, Laas Geel, Berbera, Kismayo, Baidoa, Garowe and Bosaso. Each requires different timing and local planning.
A different complement to Kenya or Tanzania
Somalia should not try to imitate Kenya’s safari brand or Tanzania’s major wildlife circuits. Its strength is different. For a multi-country traveller, that difference is the reason to add it.
