East Africa is moving toward a more connected tourism story. Rather than presenting every country as a completely separate trip, regional tourism bodies are increasingly promoting journeys that combine cities, coast, wildlife, culture and business travel across borders.
East Africa as one tourism region
The East African Community is actively promoting the region under the “Visit East Africa – Feel the Vibe” brand. The goal is to encourage multi-destination travel and make the region easier to understand as one broad tourism market.
The EAC says tourism contributes around 10% of regional GDP on average and that the region welcomed about 8.5 million international tourists in 2024. Its stated ambition is to move beyond 11 million arrivals by 2027.
Where Somalia fits
Somalia became the eighth full member of the East African Community in March 2024. That places Somalia more clearly inside the regional tourism conversation, alongside Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Somalia adds a different type of experience to the regional mix: Indian Ocean coastline, historic port cities, Somali food and coffee culture, archaeology, urban heritage and family/diaspora travel.
What multi-destination travel can look like
A traveller might combine Nairobi with Mogadishu, or use an East African hub before continuing to Somalia. The important part is to plan each country’s entry requirements and transport separately rather than assuming one regional ticket or visa covers everything.
For Somalia, foreign-passport travellers should check the official eTA requirements before departure. Flight schedules can also change, so international arrival times should be confirmed before local touring is locked in.
