If you are already planning East Africa, adding Somalia does not have to mean rebuilding the whole journey. The key is to treat the Somalia segment as a clearly planned chapter with its own flights, entry approval and local operating plan.
Step 1: Choose the gateway
Useful gateways can include Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Istanbul and Muscat depending on your origin and travel dates. The best choice is the one that gives you a workable arrival time and protected flight connection, not simply the shortest map distance.
Step 2: Check entry requirements early
Somalia requires foreign-passport travellers to use its Electronic Travel Authorisation system. Apply using the official government channel and avoid building a non-refundable itinerary around an unconfirmed entry approval.
Step 3: Decide what kind of Somalia trip you want
A short Mogadishu visit can focus on the capital, coast and local culture. A longer journey can add other destinations depending on time and the operating plan.
Step 4: Match the hotel to the route
Hotel choice should support the daily programme, airport timing and your preferred level of comfort. Our hotel directory gives travellers a starting point, but final availability should always be confirmed for the actual dates.
Step 5: Leave room for adjustment
Somalia travel should not be planned as if every movement is guaranteed months in advance. Local operating conditions, flight changes and access can affect the sequence. A good itinerary is clear but adaptable.
Step 6: Connect it to the rest of East Africa
When combining Somalia with Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania or another East African destination, keep each country’s visa/entry and transport rules separate. Regional tourism cooperation does not remove national immigration requirements for international visitors.
