Somalia’s tourism story in 2026 is not a simple “new destination” narrative. It is a combination of better digital entry processes, new air links, changing hospitality, creator-led media exposure and a growing number of local travel businesses trying to make visits more organised.
Official tourism numbers show an existing visitor economy
The Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism reports that in 2024 Somalia recorded more than 125,000 international tourist and diaspora arrivals, with tourism contributing 5.2% to GDP and hotel establishment revenues of about $85 million. These are government-reported sector figures and include different types of visitors, not only leisure tourists.
Air access is widening
The September 2026 launch of SalamAir’s Muscat–Mogadishu route adds to connections through Istanbul, Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Entebbe and Djibouti. Better air access does not remove the need for route planning, but it gives travellers more options.
Entry is becoming more digital
Somalia’s Immigration and Citizenship Agency launched its electronic visa/eTA system in September 2025. Foreign visitors are instructed to apply online before travel through the official government portal.
